CARDANO SL

Cardano

Cardano SL is the cryptocurrency component of Cardano, a blockchain platform developed by IOHK. When they reached out to us, the company's aim was to create a peer-reviewed blockchain system that offered users transparent access to financial services. Serokell assisted IOHK in implementing a cutting-edge Proof of Stake (PoS) algorithm to establish a dependable financial platform for customers. We developed the layer utilizing a PoS protocol, allowing participants to use their cryptocurrency instead of relying on computational mining. Unlike previous attempts at PoS algorithm design, Serokell's work was rooted in Ouroboros, an algorithm that underwent formal verification and was devised by a team of researchers. By collaborating with researchers from IOHK, the University of Athens, the University of Connecticut, the University of Edinburgh, Aarhus University, and the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Serokell successfully transformed it into a functional software system. Our partnership generated a Haskell project at the crossroads of blockchain technology, mechanism design, and cryptography. Key features we implemented include: a blockchain based on a novel PoS consensus algorithm; a ledger that ensured secure transactions for user funds; built-in scripting language support; a CLI client for the Cardano network; a web backend for Daedalus, Cardano's wallet; a block explorer for the Cardano network (developed in collaboration with IOHK); and a web application to distribute ADA tokens sold during the ICO. Since its launch in 2018, Cardano has emerged as one of the most secure and scalable cryptocurrency platforms available, ranking #7 in the list of top 100 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization at that time.

Edna

BIOCAD

Edna is a web-based, open-source application designed for data analysis and storage. It was developed by Serokell at the request of Biocad, a prominent international biotech company. Previously, Biocad's researchers relied on a proprietary data analysis tool that presented numerous challenges, such as lacking storage for experimental data, offering a limited set of curves and functionality, and not allowing for plugin development. Our goal was to create a user-friendly tool with a broad range of features and the ability to incorporate new ones as needed. After thorough research, the Serokell team successfully built a free, flexible tool. Edna operates in the cloud, enabling scientists to utilize their personal devices for their work. It also includes customization options to align with company processes. Key features of Edna are: a Data Viewer for examining experimental data and generating graphs for specific compounds through a web interface, a Data Analyzer that can evaluate data and produce necessary metrics, and a Library that archives and displays historical data on experiments and testing methodologies. We collaborated closely with Biocad to develop a minimum viable product (MVP) that is ready for testing and can be easily enhanced with plugins and additional features.

Telegram Open Network (TON)

The Telegram Open Network was a blockchain platform developed by the creators of Telegram. To invigorate their project, they frequently held contests for blockchain developers. The purpose of the competition was straightforward: participants were tasked with creating one or more from a list of five distinct smart contracts, including a multi-signature wallet, a simple TON DNS Resolver smart contract with automatic registration for new subdomains, a synchronous two-party payment channel, a simple TON DNS Resolver smart contract with manual registration for new subdomains, and an asynchronous two-party payment channel. Developers’ submissions would then be evaluated by their peers and a panel of judges. Serokell competed against nearly 70 teams and secured the top prize. We developed two efficient solutions that were seamlessly integrated into the TON ecosystem, utilizing the programming languages provided by TON and even creating our own embedded domain-specific language (eDSL). Our asynchronous payment channel solution facilitates off-chain payments between users, conserving both time and money. Users no longer need to wait for a new block to be created in order to make transfers, enabling them to send payments as small and frequent as desired—such as for morning coffee or pizza, or for microtransactions. This is achieved by establishing a contract where each participant contributes shares, accompanied by specific IOU messages to keep track of the current debt. The contract was built using FunC, and as per competition requirements, the command-line tool for interacting with it was developed in Fift. Our project won first place in the blockchain competition, providing Telegram with a solution that allows TON users to quickly and securely transfer payments off-chain while ensuring final settlement. We were extremely proud to contribute to the advancement of what was considered one of the most promising blockchains at the time and are eager to engage in similar projects in the future.
