“How can we stay relevant in the marketplace and to our stakeholders?” ENSURING MARKET SHARE AND STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT FOR RECYCLE BC The challenge Recycle BC required the backing and adherence of its supply chain partners—including local governments, First Nations, private firms, and community groups—to roll out its updated province-wide packaging and paper product (PPP) program, aimed at fulfilling Canada’s environmental obligations regarding plastics. The solutions Realize recognized the necessity for Recycle BC to gain a thorough understanding of its essential stakeholders and partners to address their concerns, encourage cohesion, and foster stakeholder commitment. Our approach and methodology Realize organized and led a two-day consultation involving 136 of Recycle BC’s supply chain partners, comprising local government and First Nations collectors, private businesses, provincial ministries, stewardship agencies, educational and community organizations, among others. Nine workshops were conducted to discuss aspects of the proposed changes, facilitating clarity and alignment, with over 900 questions and comments noted and addressed. To assist the First Nations Recycling Initiative and ensure equitable recycling services for both urban and rural communities, Realize developed the First Nations Recycling Program Toolkit. This resource aided First Nations and Northern communities in independently evaluating their recycling needs and managing the planning process. Additionally, Realize performed a thorough analysis of regulatory standards and GHG reporting practices across municipalities in BC and SK, as well as evaluated the current practices and standards of Recycle BC’s collector partners to inform the design of Recycle BC’s own supply chain GHG reporting and tracking system.

"We have successfully attracted talented individuals, but employee turnover remains an issue." STABILIZED AND CONSISTENT STAFF TURNOVER FOR COWICHAN VALLEY REGIONAL DISTRICT The Challenge: The HR department of the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) was unable to effectively support its internal clients beyond the recruitment process. This limitation resulted in gaps in essential areas like organizational effectiveness, labor relations, training, and employee wellness/OH&S. The Solution: Realize identified two main aspects of CVRD's challenge: 1) creating a new HR service delivery model to fill critical service gaps, and 2) implementing people-focused change management practices to facilitate the successful adoption of the new model. Our Approach and Methodology: Realize performed a detailed audit of the service delivery model, gathering insights from leadership, management, and staff to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the current system. Design thinking sessions were facilitated with leaders and managers to ensure strategic alignment and clarity between HR and CVRD. Based on these findings, a new HR service delivery model was created to effectively address significant gaps in four key areas: organizational effectiveness, labor relations, training, and employee wellness/OH&S. To implement the recommended changes and system, Realize offered the leadership team training in people-centered change management. This involved engaging, training, communicating, and supporting employees to encourage their acceptance and effective adaptation to the new service delivery model, ensuring a smooth transition.

"We require enhanced flexibility and financial oversight over our risk management initiatives." IMPLEMENTED STRATEGIC AGILITY FOR THE BC NON-PROFIT HOUSING ASSOCIATION The challenge The BC Non-Profit Housing Association (BCNPHA) sought a financially sustainable solution to address issues related to risk management, incidental losses, and limited control over insurance premiums, while still achieving their strategic goal of providing accessible and affordable insurance for their members. The solution Realize identified two main aspects of BCNPHA's challenge: 1) creating a financially sustainable insurance product that mitigated risk, minimized incidental losses, and allowed for better control over premiums; and 2) ensuring that this insurance option remained accessible and affordable for BCNPHA members. Our approach and methodology Realize carried out an extensive feasibility study and constructed an investment-grade financial model to evaluate the practicality, advantages, and costs associated with BCNPHA establishing a captive insurance company to cover internal risks and reduce overall administrative expenses. By modeling various best and worst-case scenarios over a five-year outlook, we confirmed that a captive insurance company would be viable in all situations. Collaborative design thinking sessions were held with leadership to ensure alignment and co-create the four main objectives for the BCNPHA Captive Insurance Company (Captive). To enhance strategic agility and provide an affordable, financially sound insurance solution for BCNPHA members, Realize formulated a business plan that included a strategic and operational framework for Captive along with a three-year launch timeline. To implement the recommendations, Realize supported the leadership team throughout the incorporation process and handled the FICOM application for BCNPHA.
