Barnes and Noble.com – Used Book Marketplace

Barnes and Noble created a Used Book Marketplace where independent sellers and individuals could offer their books at reduced prices. This was an additional feature on bn.com, which previously only sold new books. Our task was to develop a platform that allowed booksellers to list their books online and connect the site to BN's SAP ERP backend for processing orders, conducting fraud checks, and handling fulfillment. The team encountered several obstacles throughout the project, including the integration of fraud detection services, evolving sales tax collection services, and a particularly intricate SAP ERP integration. Eventually, the website permitted single sign-on for users across both the new and used book sections, providing a smooth purchasing experience for both categories of books. Order fulfillment data was synchronized between BN's SAP system and the retailers' data feeds.

Pearson System of Courses – Revolutionizing Technology in K-12 Classrooms

Pearson’s System of Courses is a digital platform designed to update the learning experience in K-12 settings. It enables the distribution of curated resources such as interactive games, animations, eBooks, and videos to students' tablets or laptops. Additionally, it offers tools for students to complete assignments, collaborate with peers, and take assessments. Teachers can track student progress and give tailored feedback. The app is compatible across multiple platforms, currently available on iOS and Windows. It was originally created as a cross-platform web application using HTML5 and Javascript, later adapted for iOS, Windows, Android, and ChromeOS. As part of this initiative, we have created a comprehensive backend ordering system equipped with powerful APIs that can be utilized by any eCommerce website to incorporate USPS as a shipping option. This development enables US manufacturers to reach global markets while providing the USPS with vital additional revenue. Considering the vast amounts of data anticipated by the USPS, our team selected MongoDB as the backend data repository for this project. The services layer is built using NodeJS on AWS Lambda, and the APIs are managed through AWS API Management. One significant challenge our team encountered was determining the applicable taxes for various international jurisdictions, which we addressed by acquiring and consolidating real-time data from several third-party services. We have successfully integrated these services with over 10 eCommerce merchants.
