With a mechanical foundation and the intention for Apollo to function in commercial and industrial settings, Apptronik and Argo initiated an open dialogue regarding the characteristics a humanoid robot should possess, enlisting Pushstart for the robot's industrial design. Being Helpful, Not Harmful. Humans naturally interpret facial expressions in daily interactions, so Apollo's head and face design would significantly influence how it is perceived. The design process began with concepts ranging from more industrial to whimsical, aiming for a balance. Although Apollo's head resembles a human's, its side profile and brow were designed to counteract any negative stereotypes often linked to humanoid robots. The empty space in the head minimizes the perception of a "brain," reminding people that the robot lacks independent thought. The brow adds a slightly inquisitive expression, suggesting that Apollo relies on humans for input and knowledge about its tasks. Equipped with cameras and sensors, Apollo's eyes are essential for successful interaction, navigation, and safety. Engineering Excellence. While Apollo's frontal appearance is softer, its side view and torso highlight Apptronik’s engineering prowess while reinforcing that Apollo is a tool—a product, not a person. The sharp angles and visible mechanical components underline its engineering integrity, and the handle on the torso emphasizes Apollo’s practicality and utility. Shaping the Future. Apollo represents the start of what promises to be the evolution of humanoid robots. The industrial design elements of Apollo’s shape are aimed at fostering a positive outlook on future interactions and collaborations between humans and humanoids.
