Resource app for academic researchers

University of Illinois IT Department

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation at the University of Illinois supports faculty, staff, and students in their research initiatives. Their IT team engaged Pixo to design and develop a tailored web application that would gather, organize, and maintain an evolving inventory of technology resources from various data sources across the extensive Urbana-Champaign campus. The aim was to provide researchers with a centralized resource for finding equipment, training, and guidance. To achieve this, we prioritized building the infrastructure and then refining it. We concentrated on delivering a fully customized experience for both front-end and back-end users. For back-end users, the ability to extract data from university APIs and the content management system was crucial. For front-end users, we implemented a comprehensive system for searching and filtering to ensure ease of use and accessibility. In the first of two phases, we established the technical infrastructure and developed a basic front-end for the system, focusing on integrating various components, including a transactional database, an information warehouse, query APIs, and additional custom import connectors. During the second phase, we enhanced the front-end user interface. Through user experience research, design sprints, and testing, we refined the UI to enable researchers to browse and filter more efficiently, incorporating feedback from campus researchers.

Illinois Early Childhood Asset Map website

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The Illinois Early Childhood Asset Map (IECAM) gathers and analyzes data on early childhood services from various state agencies, making this information available to the public, including grant writers and policymakers dedicated to enhancing children's lives in Illinois. We collaborated with the IECAM team to develop a new user-focused website using the Symfony framework and a content-first methodology. The main challenge was to simplify data accessibility: IECAM's website had difficulties fulfilling its two primary goals—directing data-savvy users to the database and assisting inexperienced users in comprehending the available data. This was due to a cluttered information architecture and an outdated content management system (CMS) that led to numerous redundant and ineffective pages. Our solution involved considering both the needs of front-end and back-end users. For the back-end users, Pixo aimed to streamline website maintenance by implementing a more user-friendly CMS, reducing the chances of outdated and repetitive content accumulating, thereby enhancing the experience for front-end users. Pixo conducted a swift and adaptable discovery phase to identify what IECAM's audiences truly required from the website. The previous IECAM site featured too many content types, overly complicated taxonomy, and excessive flexibility. We concluded that IECAM's content authors would benefit from a more focused set of features tailored for their primary audience. Based on research and testing from the discovery phase, our content strategy team designed an information architecture intended to help even the least data-savvy users locate the content they need. Additionally, we emphasized accessibility in content, design, and development—not only because it was mandated by funding sources but also because IECAM sought to diminish barriers to its public services and enhance the overall experience for everyone.

User interface app for a portable soil test system

360 Yield Center

360 Yield Center develops products aimed at enhancing farmers' precision and efficiency in their fields. Among these is the 360 SOILSCAN™, a portable system designed to help growers assess the soil's nitrogen application needs. Initially, users found the tool's basic control panel lacking, prompting the company to seek assistance from Pixo. The challenge was to enhance usability without altering the tool itself. Despite introducing an innovative product in 360 SOILSCAN™, the control panel's functionality was not user-friendly. Since redesigning the control panel wasn't feasible, we developed a sleek, user-friendly iPad application that connects to the device via Bluetooth. This made the device easier to use and boosted its adoption rate. The solution involved understanding real users and tailoring the design to their needs. Our UX team began by observing farmers and agronomists using the 360 SOILSCAN™ in the field to identify common issues and limitations, such as connectivity problems, glare, small buttons, and distractions. After gaining insight into how early users interacted with the device and the operational context, we set about planning enhancements. The outcome is an app that enhances productivity. The new interface is modern and streamlined, guiding the grower through the process—from soil sample preparation to obtaining an accurate nitrate ion count, which facilitates quicker decisions on fertilizer application. The success of this product hinged on thoroughly understanding the users and their operational challenges before designing the interface and making decisions about the platform.
