Vessel Monitoring and Analytics with IoT

SMEC Marine

Challenge SMEC is a significant player in the marine industry. To help reduce carbon emissions and optimize routes, vessel owners have reached out to SMEC to gather data from various machines onboard using IoT sensors, which transmit the information to a cloud application via satellite. This collected data needs to be analyzed for improved route forecasting, engine wear assessment, fuel usage, and carbon emissions. Solution Our IoT, Application Development, and Cloud teams collaborated to create a comprehensive solution. IoT hardware sensors were designed and linked to the ship's COM ports. A CentOS-based Linux distribution was developed to operate on a server within the ship, collecting data from the sensors. This data is then prepared for transmission to a satellite data channel, which relays it to an application hosted on AWS. AWS TimestreamDB is utilized for real-time analytics and forecasting. A user interface was created using Grafana to be displayed on large screens within a command center.

Rearchitecting 365andUP for AWS

365andUP

Challenge 365andUP operated on a hybrid infrastructure that utilized both AWS and DigitalOcean as service providers. During a one-minute website monitoring test, the data generated from DigitalOcean led to a significant influx of data into AWS, which occasionally caused scaling failures and disrupted monitoring services. To meet the increasing demand for their offerings and enhance performance, they aimed to upgrade their infrastructure by fully transitioning to AWS. We began with an initial evaluation and devised a two-phase strategy. The first phase focused on refactoring all monitoring services to AWS, enabling the application to swiftly adapt to fluctuating customer needs and enhance resilience. The second phase involved utilizing AWS's PaaS services, which included replacing repetitive tasks with the serverless solution, Lambda; moving queue management to SQS; and minimizing team workload by implementing the managed service of DocumentDB.

IoT+Webservice development for SAP

Challenge: QPMC is in the process of implementing SAP within the organization. As a key material supply company, they operate large stock yards where trucks must be weighed upon entering and leaving. Currently, the weighbridges cannot transmit data from their machines to the SAP system. Therefore, a solution is needed to relay this data to SAP, along with automating the control of traffic lights at the gates based on the weighing procedures. Solution: We have created an IoT board that connects to the weighbridge to collect data from the sensors, which is then transmitted as a SOAP web service to the SAP application. This IoT board will also integrate with the traffic lights and adjust them based on inputs from both the operator and the SAP service. This solution has been implemented at all of their facilities throughout the region.
