An unconventional mindset leads to an innovative strategy. The City of Gainesville has recently taken on a mission to become the most citizen-focused local government in the United States. In 2017, this initiative encountered some obstacles. The previous branding didn't align with the strategic shift that had taken place, yet the city wasn't ready to engage in a conventional rebranding effort. However, there was an urgent need for new ways to communicate and demonstrate the citizen-centered concept and its implications for the residents of Gainesville. Given that the citizen-centered philosophy revolves around questions such as “How can we empower you?” and “How can we improve this city further?”, we recognized that the most effective solution was to adopt an unbranding approach.
