Pact Coffee — A Better Way

Pact Coffee

A new brand positioning and campaign encourages Londoners to reconsider their coffee choices. Today, there is a heightened awareness about the origins of our food and beverages. However, the coffee industry lacks the fairness and transparency that consumers deserve, leaving them largely uninformed. Many brands offer coffees with artificially created flavors, and often farmers struggle to break even. Our goal was to help Pact Coffee showcase its leadership in ethical coffee and illustrate how high-quality coffee can contribute to transforming the industry. This is particularly challenging given the existing confusion surrounding ethical labels like fair-trade and the minimal differences among brands in the specialty coffee market. Our solution—A Better Way—aligned with Pact’s mission to improve coffee for everyone, considering both people and the planet. We highlighted powerful truths about Pact’s practices, such as knowing each of their 200 farmers globally, paying them an average of 55% above fair-trade prices, and providing education to enhance their farm profitability and family well-being. These lasting partnerships result in improved livelihoods for farmers and superior coffee for consumers. This message was then translated into Pact’s first above-the-line (ATL) campaign, which aimed to inform consumers about the harsh realities of the coffee industry and the negative impact of large coffee corporations on lives and the planet. The campaign was prominently displayed on major out-of-home sites across London, in public transport areas, and through key radio channels. Did the campaign achieve its goals? Pact experienced a 50% increase in customer acquisition in London during the campaign, and a subsequent brand awareness survey indicated growth in both prompted and unprompted brand recognition.

Bertinet Bakery produces their sourdough using traditional methods, incorporating only a handful of natural ingredients, extensive skill, ample time, and a commitment to quality. We revamped, redesigned, and transformed their strategy to develop a loaf that stands out on the shelf and carries a meaningful message in their communications.
