Achieving a complete data centre exit in 7 months

Unknown

Through Nordcloud’s innovative Managed Cloud Migration strategy, Finnair successfully completed a full exit from its data center in just seven months. The Covid-19 pandemic, which halted travel, presented a unique opportunity to transition away from their data center while also rearchitecting and replatforming applications. Challenges included a tight deadline due to an approaching end date for their data center contract, as well as resource constraints resulting from the pandemic, which altered working patterns and reduced capacity. The need for agility and cost savings became even more critical during this time. Additionally, Finnair faced a diverse application landscape, with various applications and databases needing different levels of attention—some required replatforming while others needed rearchitecting, and a few were mission-critical. There was also a lack of visibility due to inconsistent documentation, necessitating greater control. The solution involved a well-defined migration strategy that allowed Finnair to transition from its outdated legacy technology to AWS-native products and services. Over the course of just seven months, Nordcloud managed to migrate around 400 servers and 70 applications without any upfront costs. Additionally, a seamless transition involved rearchitecting and replatforming 20 applications, which resulted in significant license fee savings. As a result, Finnair managed to exit its data center as planned in seven months, achieving double-digit total cost of ownership (TCO) savings. The business impact included a significant decrease in capacity and license costs, with managed service expenses now tied to actual consumption. The entire commercial model became scalable, and the service delivery model shifted to a completely agile one. Security improved, and technical risks decreased, with costly incidents largely eliminated. Finnair now benefits from utilizing native AWS products and services to support its strategic growth.

Building a new cloud-native blockchain solution

Ericsson encountered significant challenges during the development of their blockchain-based solution, known as Ericsson Customer Acceptance (ECA), which aimed to transform the acceptance approval workflow. As ECA approached its completion, issues related to time constraints, security, and architectural design arose. Traditional deployment models proved insufficient, and the necessity for high-security standards added complexity to this innovative initiative. To address these issues, Nordcloud implemented several key solutions: - **Cloud Architecture:** They designed a robust and efficient Azure-based cloud architecture optimized for a microservices environment using Kubernetes. - **Security Measures:** A security baseline was established utilizing Microsoft Defender for Cloud, alongside the integration of network security components. - **Global Expansion:** To enhance global accessibility, Nordcloud implemented multi-tenant environments, leveraging Azure DevOps and Terraform to maximize speed and flexibility. - **Modular Code Base:** The modularity of Nordcloud's code base facilitated automated end-to-end deployments and served as the backbone for ECA-as-a-service. - **GitOps Practices:** They incorporated GitOps methodologies to ensure continuous deployments and automatic reconciliation processes. - **DevSecOps Adoption:** Nordcloud advanced DevSecOps practices, which automated deployments, shifted security controls to earlier stages, and fostered organizational change. The outcomes of these efforts included: - **Blockchain Solution:** A cloud-native architecture that supports ECA as a blockchain solution. - **DevOps & GitOps Adoption:** More than 15 continuous delivery pipelines, allowing for over 20 daily deployments. - **Faster Releases:** Achieved a 50-fold increase in the speed of regional expansion and onboarding new customers. - **Transformed Delivery:** Introduced lean working methodologies that enhanced speed to market and propelled changes beyond the project's original scope.

Building cloud infra in a scalable, automated way

Vitesco Technologies faced the urgent challenge of migrating its core IT environment comprehensively. This migration necessitated sustainable automation using Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) and a flexible approach that could easily scale software assets. The situation was further complicated by the requirement for a customized, agile operational model. To address these challenges, a bespoke operating and managed services model was developed to cater to various needs across different cloud environments. This approach featured two tiers: a comprehensive model for production and quality assurance (QA) and a streamlined version for QA and development. Standardized building blocks created through IaC enabled the rapid deployment of environments and applications, fostering effective collaboration between Vitesco Technologies and Nordcloud. A strong emphasis on automation allowed for the seamless integration of managed services from the beginning, with over 90% of services onboarded without manual input. Using Nordcloud Klarity, the team efficiently supported service operations across both cloud and on-premises settings. The collaborative efforts of Nordcloud and Vitesco Technologies's Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team resulted in the quick development and deployment of the initial components within a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) framework. Within six months, all components reached production status, resulting in over 800 instances deployed, with Nordcloud managing approximately 65% of Vitesco Technologies's cloud resources. Nordcloud Klarity proved to be a key element in optimizing management processes, providing a centralized platform for the managed service team, which improved cloud and hybrid estate management in essential areas like OS images, patching, backup, and enhanced Financial Operations (FinOps) capabilities.
