Achieving a complete data centre exit in 7 months

Through Nordcloud’s innovative Managed Cloud Migration strategy, Finnair successfully completed a full exit from its data center in just seven months. The Covid-19 pandemic, which halted travel, presented a unique opportunity to transition away from their data center while also rearchitecting and replatforming applications. Challenges included a tight deadline due to an approaching end date for their data center contract, as well as resource constraints resulting from the pandemic, which altered working patterns and reduced capacity. The need for agility and cost savings became even more critical during this time. Additionally, Finnair faced a diverse application landscape, with various applications and databases needing different levels of attention—some required replatforming while others needed rearchitecting, and a few were mission-critical. There was also a lack of visibility due to inconsistent documentation, necessitating greater control. The solution involved a well-defined migration strategy that allowed Finnair to transition from its outdated legacy technology to AWS-native products and services. Over the course of just seven months, Nordcloud managed to migrate around 400 servers and 70 applications without any upfront costs. Additionally, a seamless transition involved rearchitecting and replatforming 20 applications, which resulted in significant license fee savings. As a result, Finnair managed to exit its data center as planned in seven months, achieving double-digit total cost of ownership (TCO) savings. The business impact included a significant decrease in capacity and license costs, with managed service expenses now tied to actual consumption. The entire commercial model became scalable, and the service delivery model shifted to a completely agile one. Security improved, and technical risks decreased, with costly incidents largely eliminated. Finnair now benefits from utilizing native AWS products and services to support its strategic growth.

Building cloud infra in a scalable, automated way
