Rebrand of global music platform NDC
THE CHALLENGE The concept emerged when a group of experienced DJs, dissatisfied with the existing house and disco music available for their audience, brainstormed to create a new type of radio station. Drawing inspiration from the days of pirate radio but with a contemporary twist suitable for the original ravers who are now somewhat older, NDC (Northern Dance Collective) Radio was launched on New Year’s Eve 2017. Over the next eight years, the platform gained momentum, attracting musical talent and listeners from across the globe. However, after establishing everything on their own, including the visual branding, they faced a pivotal moment; they needed to appeal to a discerning demographic of music lovers while staying authentic to their roots and steering clear of mimicking large mainstream labels (yes, we mean you, Defected). Additionally, they had expanded beyond just a radio station to include two events companies operating in the UK, Europe, and the US, with ambitions for further growth of the NDC brand in the future. THE SOLUTION The new identity centers around a distinctive, iconic symbol. It consists of a simplified version of the letters N, D, and C, inverted to symbolize unity, reflecting how dance music brings people together. A primary goal for establishing a recognizable brand was to create a symbol that could eventually stand alone and be instantly associated with NDC. Merchandise is a vital revenue source, so it was crucial that the branding would be effective on clothing and resonate with fans. As a digital-first identity, the color palette is purposely bold and vibrant. Mainly existing online, this strategy allowed for a daring use of color without compromising its effectiveness across various print materials.
