This game is a visually stunning platform-adventure Metroidvania created by Moon Studios and published by Xbox Game Studios. Renowned for its breathtaking graphics and captivating gameplay, Ori emphasizes exploration, item collection, upgrades, and revisiting previously inaccessible areas, resulting in a fulfilling experience for players. The challenges we faced included coordinating the efforts of team members on large scene files and assets to avoid repository conflicts during pull and push operations. Additionally, optimizing game performance was essential, as many levels were saturated with superfluous assets that burdened the GPU without adding significant visual value. Another challenge involved establishing and refining the AI behavior for in-game entities to facilitate smooth and dynamic interactions. What we accomplished included: → **Performance Optimization:** We examined game levels to identify and eliminate unnecessary objects that slowed down GPU performance with little impact on gameplay or visuals. → **AI Behavior Setup:** We designed and enhanced AI entity behavior to improve the smoothness and immersion of in-game interactions. → **Custom Editor Tools:** We created innovative editor tools for artists, designers, and animators to simplify their workflows. Results: Ori and the Will of the Wisps enchanted millions of players worldwide, receiving accolades such as Outstanding Visual Style (2020) and Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards (2020). The team also played a key role in its successful port to the Nintendo Switch, ensuring optimal performance across platforms while preserving its visual splendor. The advanced editor tools developed throughout the project have since become vital to the workflow, supporting both artists and designers.

Medieval Empires - Blockchain-Powered Strategy Gam

Medieval Empires

This project, Medieval Empires, plunges players into a historical realm where millions engage in building, exploring, and conquering to achieve wealth and fame. Utilizing blockchain technology, this multiplayer strategy game presents thrilling opportunities for players to not only play but also possess in-game assets, resulting in a distinctive "Play-to-Own" experience. Players devise strategies to manage territories, establish empires, and dominate the battlefield. Challenge We Faced: The project required an expanded team with a Unity3D developer to improve game mechanics and performance while ensuring high visual quality. A dedicated Technical Artist was also vital to create impressive game environments and optimize assets for the WebGL platform, ensuring excellent visuals without sacrificing performance. What We Accomplished: → Unity3D Development: Our developer focused on implementing new game mechanics, enhancing performance, and collaborating with designers and artists to ensure the game's technical foundation matched its creative vision. We also significantly contributed to creating engaging visual effects that enriched the overall gameplay experience. → Technical Art: Our technical artist played a key role in crafting visually stunning game environments and optimizing assets for peak performance. We employed custom shaders and innovative rendering techniques to maximize WebGL's capabilities, guaranteeing that the game provided an immersive experience while operating smoothly. Results: The Medieval Empires project introduced exciting new gameplay elements such as building and land management, adding depth to the game’s strategic aspects. The rendering pipeline was enhanced to achieve high-quality visuals on the WebGL platform through custom shaders and skilled technical artistry. The game continues to flourish in the Play-to-Own model, built on the Polygon blockchain, delivering a captivating and visually impressive strategic experience for players.

No Rest for the Wicked - Action Adventure RPG

This Game Is: From the creators of Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps, No Rest for the Wicked is a precision-focused action RPG that redefines the genre. Developed by Moon Studios, the game promises a captivating and intense experience by merging fast-paced combat with detailed storytelling and state-of-the-art design. Challenge: KAPPS was engaged to assemble a specialized mini-team of two Unity3D developers responsible for creating next-generation Editor tools. The challenge involved transitioning legacy tools from the Ori: Will of the Wisps project into the current workflow while also creating new tools to streamline processes for animators, artists, and level designers. What We Implemented: → Animation Framework: Developed an animation framework to simplify and enhance the animation process, making it more user-friendly for artists. → Editor Tool Development: Focused on key editor components such as Animator Graph, Behaviour Tree Graph, and other Editor Windows to optimize development workflows. → Custom Selection Tool: Created a custom selection tool to ensure accurate object selection, minimizing workflow interruptions and errors. → Social Tool: Built a social tool for the development team to enable real-time tracking of who is working on particular scenes or assets, with alerts when assets are actively being developed. Results: The team successfully designed and launched over 10 advanced Editor tools, greatly enhancing workflow efficiency for animators, level designers, and game designers. The legacy tools from the 2D-oriented Ori projects were adapted for the 3D setting of No Rest for the Wicked, fully integrating into the team’s updated workflow to facilitate smooth development of this ambitious project.
