USA Today: improving UX, UI & content distribution

We collaborated with USA Today’s in-house development team to provide continuous development and consulting for the aspects of their USATODAY.com Sports sites that utilized WordPress. Their goal was to upgrade their outdated codebase to align with WordPress coding standards and to create a cohesive admin interface that simplifies publishing processes and allows for varied content distribution to Facebook Instant Articles and Apple News. The Sports section of USATODAY.com consists of multiple sub-sites, each with its own plugins, which meant the in-house team developed a different user interface for each plugin, requiring authors to reacquaint themselves with a new UI every time. To enhance the efficiency of workflows for both developers and authors, we enhanced the WordPress Fieldmanager plugin, providing a polished workspace and ensuring a uniform interface for a smooth administrative experience. To reach a broader audience, we implemented integrations for the automated distribution of content to Facebook Instant Articles and Apple News. For Facebook Instant Articles, we customized the Simple Instant Articles plugin to maintain consistent formatting of embeds using a unique markup language. The Apple News integration was also developed from an existing plugin, sending a JSON package with post assets.

TechCrunch: Web redesign for a high-performing CMS

TechCrunch reached out to Human Made to partner on a redesign initiative aimed at creating a more efficient and effective content management system (CMS). Their goal was to leverage advancements in the WordPress REST API to develop a headless architecture on managed WordPress hosting. A key objective was to simplify the editorial process for non-technical teams, resulting in a user-friendly publishing platform for TechCrunch's publishers. To achieve this, we implemented a decentralized publishing model that supports the editorial team while enhancing the online experience for users. This model incorporates a headless WordPress CMS and a React frontend, allowing TechCrunch to quickly adapt their design to meet evolving business needs, placing them at the forefront of the publishing industry. The decoupling of the frontend from the CMS offers the added benefit of enabling editorial teams to confidently use a single tool—WordPress—regardless of future frontend redesigns. This not only empowers the editorial staff with their platform but also eliminates delays in onboarding new personnel whenever changes are made.

Custom editorial review & site redesign for Newton

Newton reached out to us for assistance in updating and integrating their old system into a tailored solution that would be simpler, more scalable, and better suited to their requirements. They sought a complete redevelopment and redesign of their website, with a clear intention to leverage the features and functionalities of WordPress. As a financial services organization, Newton operates under stringent regulatory standards, necessitating a user experience that is not only smooth but also capable of withstanding rigorous regulatory examination. To address this, we created a custom plugin that periodically generates static mirror snapshots, which are systematically archived to provide a necessary audit trail. These saved files are easily accessible, allowing data retrieval from any point within the past seven years. Additionally, Newton required a bespoke editorial review process to ensure that content underwent thorough scrutiny before publication. We devised a system that allows multiple drafts of the same post, enabling editors to select, review, and publish only the approved version. Moreover, Newton’s editorial team needed precise control over all site content, prompting us to develop extra admin sections for editors to manage specific parts of the site. We also made adjustments to the site’s cookie handling to ensure that each institution's version of the site displays a unique legal disclaimer that users must view and acknowledge upon each visit.
