Greater Good Science Center

For almost ten years, the Greater Good Science Center and its magazine have been leaders in the study of compassion, happiness, and altruism—the elements of a meaningful life. In 2016, the Greater Good team initiated a comprehensive redesign project that separated the magazine from the GG Science Center website, enhanced accessibility for disabled users, and broadened the range of tools and content available. The original Greater Good website combined both the magazine and the center, so the first step in the project was to create two distinct sites. The newly designed Greater Good Science Center website features a clean aesthetic similar to that of the magazine website, thanks to the design efforts of Project6 Design, a graphic design firm based in San Francisco. This new site serves as a home for the center's various research initiatives, events, and courses. Like the magazine, the goal was to develop a flexible and user-friendly resource that encourages visitor engagement with the center. The backend of the site, built on ExpressionEngine, equips Greater Good staff with straightforward tools for adding new content and making edits. While the new site is simpler than the magazine, it effectively showcases the diverse activities the center undertakes. Explore it today!

The BIG JOY Project

Mission: JOY, GGIA, UCSF

The BIG JOY Project originates from the documentary film Mission: JOY, which features the insights and humor of two beloved peace figures, His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The film emphasizes their goal of teaching people how to maintain JOY even during difficult times. The project serves as a practical way to promote this mission by encouraging participants to engage in a free, daily 7-minute mindfulness practice or micro-act of JOY for a week. Alongside these micro-acts, participants respond to surveys at the beginning and end of the week, as well as answer emotional check-in questions before and after each daily activity, and at the day's conclusion. The BIG JOY Project generates a significant dataset for scientific research on happiness, conducted by the Greater Good in Action and the University of San Francisco, making it the largest citizen-science initiative focused on happiness. The site is designed to be accessible on all devices—desktop, laptop, smartphone, and tablet—across all time zones. It also complies with WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility standards to accommodate participants with disabilities and is available in multiple languages to further reduce access barriers. An essential requirement of the project was to ensure inclusivity for all. Hop Studios developed a custom ExpressionEngine add-on for both the BIG JOY Project and GGIA's Pathway to Happiness program, which efficiently manages registrations, timezone preferences, notifications, random presentation of micro-acts of JOY, onboarding and closing surveys, daily check-ins, and compiles data utilized by the scientists engaged in the research.

Paine Edmonds LLP

With over 70 years of dedicated service to British Columbia, Paine Edmonds LLP was established in 1945 by Paul Britton Paine and William Henry Kemp Edmonds. Located in Vancouver, the firm specializes in family law, employment, estates, and disability claims, among other areas. Their first website debuted in 1994 and has undergone four redesigns over the past thirty years. When Paine Edmonds approached Hop Studios in June 2024, they felt their website appeared outdated and overloaded with text. They sought a modern, streamlined site that would enhance searchability and improve user-friendliness for prospective clients. Hop Studios was excited to take on this project, as we enjoy creating and revitalizing websites. They also needed to transition to a new hosting provider and implement a new content management system, for which we selected Wix to meet both requirements. A primary objective for the new site was to accurately represent Paine Edmonds' legal services and expertise. Thus, the redesign aimed to clearly and concisely communicate their offerings, reinforcing their brand and attracting new clientele. As part of the overhaul, we enhanced each page for SEO and introduced a translation tool for easier browsing in different languages. Hop Studios is committed to building websites that clients can easily manage independently. After training Paine Edmonds on how to use the Wix interface, they are now empowered to make their own updates effortlessly.
