Our Journey: For nearly ten years, we have been developing and overseeing technical teams, executing projects across various sectors, and gaining insights into delivering dependable software in intricate settings. Re-Implementation of Analytics Product Backend

Martindale-Hubbard operates an internal analytics product that gathers data on ad impressions and clicks. However, maintaining this product had become challenging and costly. The business logic that converted raw data into useful reports was hidden within complex database functions. The objective was to extract this logic and redesign it for clarity and ease of modification. We discovered that the complexity of the business logic made it unsuitable for database functions, leading us to adopt a web application with extensive test coverage instead. Throughout the development process, we needed to ensure that our new solution produced the same results as the existing system. To achieve this, we created a tool that identified inconsistencies between the two systems. During the migration of functionalities, we continuously compared the old and new behaviors, making corrections whenever discrepancies arose. Our application also featured reporting tools that enabled us to analyze the transformed data and provided insights into customers' ad spending performance. We successfully launched the new implementation without disrupting the existing system, which allowed Martindale-Hubbard to cancel an expensive commercial database license, significantly lowering their operating costs. Furthermore, the new extensible codebase facilitated ongoing incremental development.

Deciding how to modernize a Form-Builder platform

Nolo was using an outdated form-building platform for many of its products and aimed to update it. They sought to assess various modernization strategies and choose the best one. The project involved analyzing the current platform and evaluating potential solutions. We gained insight into Nolo's long-term business goals, which helped us create a shortlist of viable options: modernizing the existing platform, adopting a commercial solution, or completely rebuilding it. After careful consideration, we eliminated modernization and the off-the-shelf option as viable paths. Ultimately, we concluded that rebuilding the platform from the ground up best aligned with Nolo’s long-term aspirations. By endorsing this approach, Nolo was able to pave the way for extensive new development on their platform, leading to numerous product launches that we supported in subsequent collaborative projects.

From a MVP to a successful acquisition

EssayJack approached us with a minimum viable product (MVP) that was catering to a limited user base but faced several significant issues. They were eager to understand the reasons behind these problems and sought guidance on how to proceed with further product development. Additionally, they were looking for a consulting partner to take charge of the app's technical development. We conducted a thorough examination of the app's codebase, deployment, and technical processes, documenting the aspects that were functioning well. We also outlined potential areas for improvement, detailing the causes of the issues identified and how to resolve them. Our audit revealed the underlying reasons for many of the app's challenges. With this knowledge, we developed a more scalable and stable version of EssayJack. Subsequently, Hivekind continued to support EssayJack with product management, development, and DevOps services until its eventual acquisition.
