Improving Patient Experiences for Amgen
Medication adherence presents a significant challenge for the healthcare system today. Within six months of initiating treatment, fewer than 50% of patients stick to their prescribed therapies, leading to decreased effectiveness, escalating costs, and in severe cases, higher patient mortality rates. Frontend collaborated with the global pharmaceutical company Amgen on various UX projects targeting the Swiss, European, and US markets. Our approach is fundamentally user-centered, focusing on understanding the experiences of both patients and healthcare providers (HCPs). This understanding allows us to accurately define problems from a human perspective, with patient journey mapping being a critical starting point. By doing so, we can identify ways to support patient-HCP interactions, establish useful tools for enhancing adherence, and create messaging that encourages positive behavioral changes. Additionally, addressing the needs of HCPs—who are key intermediaries between patients—is essential for fostering this understanding. Our design solutions often combine digital technology with improved service design; however, in some cases for Amgen projects, well-crafted print materials offered simple and effective solutions. For instance, Repatha®, a medication aimed at reducing the risk of heart attack or stroke in adults, requires patients to self-administer the drug using an injectable pen, making effective training crucial. We developed a modular, print-based training kit that met patients’ needs, providing step-by-step instructions for self-injection. Sales representatives were also able to tailor the kit to suit specific HCP contexts. Furthermore, we created patient disinfection kits for the initial months of treatment to help establish positive habits and developed a printed HertzPass booklet to coordinate care between primary and specialist providers. This central log not only empowered patients in their interactions with clinicians but also made them active partners in their treatment, thereby positively influencing adherence.
