Improving Patient Experiences for Amgen

Amgen

Medication adherence presents a significant challenge for the healthcare system today. Within six months of initiating treatment, fewer than 50% of patients stick to their prescribed therapies, leading to decreased effectiveness, escalating costs, and in severe cases, higher patient mortality rates. Frontend collaborated with the global pharmaceutical company Amgen on various UX projects targeting the Swiss, European, and US markets. Our approach is fundamentally user-centered, focusing on understanding the experiences of both patients and healthcare providers (HCPs). This understanding allows us to accurately define problems from a human perspective, with patient journey mapping being a critical starting point. By doing so, we can identify ways to support patient-HCP interactions, establish useful tools for enhancing adherence, and create messaging that encourages positive behavioral changes. Additionally, addressing the needs of HCPs—who are key intermediaries between patients—is essential for fostering this understanding. Our design solutions often combine digital technology with improved service design; however, in some cases for Amgen projects, well-crafted print materials offered simple and effective solutions. For instance, Repatha®, a medication aimed at reducing the risk of heart attack or stroke in adults, requires patients to self-administer the drug using an injectable pen, making effective training crucial. We developed a modular, print-based training kit that met patients’ needs, providing step-by-step instructions for self-injection. Sales representatives were also able to tailor the kit to suit specific HCP contexts. Furthermore, we created patient disinfection kits for the initial months of treatment to help establish positive habits and developed a printed HertzPass booklet to coordinate care between primary and specialist providers. This central log not only empowered patients in their interactions with clinicians but also made them active partners in their treatment, thereby positively influencing adherence.

Unifying all government services for Irish citizen

Irish Government

Gov.ie serves as the main hub for citizens and businesses to engage with the Irish government. Prior to 2017, it was merely a single page filled with links. Since then, Frontend has collaborated with the Department of Public Expenditure & Reform and OCGIO to develop Ireland's largest and most frequented website, which will serve as the future home for all government departments. A significant challenge was consolidating information, services, and guidance from 17 government departments and 200 public agencies, necessitating close cooperation with various stakeholders. Although each entity had its specific needs, it was crucial to maintain a consistent user experience throughout the portal. The solution required a robust yet flexible framework. Frontend provided the Information Architecture, interaction design, and visual design templates that are scalable and adaptable to meet current and future demands. We also integrated the core principles of the new unified government identity system into the digital environment. Additionally, we created a content support guide to assist departments in efficiently transitioning large amounts of existing content to the new framework. This guide is meant to be a dynamic document that will evolve as more departments adopt the platform. A vital component supporting ongoing needs was the Website Visual Design Style Guide for Gov.ie, which outlined the visual design for all primary page types, including specifications for both desktop and mobile versions, detailing the design criteria for each component and their appropriate usage. The enhanced Gov.ie portal was launched in early 2019. Frontend continued its partnership to develop a Digital Design System featuring shared modular components for internal staff to create cohesive web pages across various government agencies.

Neurological therapies with the Wyss Center

Wyss Centre

Located at Campus Biotech in Geneva, the Wyss Center engages in cutting-edge neurological research in partnership with academic institutions and industry leaders. Their goal is to enhance the understanding of the brain to develop therapies that improve lives. NeuroKey™ is their advanced brain data visualization platform that integrates and processes data from brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and various monitoring devices in real-time. It retrieves information and produces commands to operate assistive devices, aiding individuals with paralysis or other nervous system disorders in regaining mobility, communication, and independence. Frontend collaborated with the Wyss Center to enhance the User Interface (UI) of the NeuroKey platform, which is a Class-1 medical device certified by CE (Conformité Européenne). The UI we developed together needed to be versatile, scalable, robust, and user-friendly. The design challenge extended beyond just visualizing the system; it involved accommodating diverse usage contexts — from researchers and clinicians to home caregivers, friends, and family members. Therefore, we tailored specific views of the platform for each context while creating a cohesive architecture and design language to connect them. CONTEXTS OF USE: Researchers and clinicians can utilize NeuroKey to swiftly set inputs in a research setting, extracting information and generating real-time control signals to operate assistive devices or stimulate nerves for movement restoration. The UI design for NeuroKey was required to be effective in both home and clinical settings to maximize its potential in providing individuals with paralysis greater independence. The architecture of the UI solution was designed to be modular and adaptable. In a rapidly changing environment, NeuroKey must be compatible with any existing or future BCIs, interface with the user’s own processing technology, and integrate seamlessly with both native and third-party applications.
