Specialized radiomodems for railway safety systems
Railway safety is of utmost importance, as it involves safeguarding employees, passengers, goods, and other users of transportation infrastructure, which is a critical factor in the quality of railway services. A significant issue in this area is railway-road crossings, particularly those without sufficient safety measures. To improve safety at these crossings, automatic warning systems, which rely on communication with remote sensors, are utilized. However, the implementation of such systems has previously been expensive and labor-intensive due to the need for communication and power lines to be installed along the tracks. Through collaboration with our customer, a leading provider of reliable wireless communication systems for the railway sector, the EMBETECH team has developed and deployed a specialized radio communication subsystem for this application. A key achievement of this project is a cutting-edge dual-band radio modem that operates with redundancy at 150 MHz and 869 MHz frequencies, complying with the highest standards of ETSI 300 113 and ETSI 300 220 Cat 1, as well as relevant railway regulations. This device offers a communication range of up to 2 kilometers with minimal power consumption, allowing it to be powered by renewable sources such as solar panels. Additionally, the solution guarantees dependable and secure real-time data transmission. Besides hardware and software development, the EMBETECH team was also tasked with preparing the project for certification tests, adhering to the strict RED and EMC standards. The communication system is currently in the pilot implementation stage.
