SmartRadon - Web and Mobile Application for Radon Monitoring
**Overview:** Elysian Software, in collaboration with a research team from the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at Babeș-Bolyai University, Romania’s largest university, created a comprehensive solution for monitoring, managing, and minimizing exposure to radon gas and other air pollutants.
**Challenges:** The main hurdle faced was developing the applications solely using the communication protocol with the remote hardware. We needed to devise effective testing methods while ensuring that the installed equipment in residential homes did not disrupt the daily lives of the occupants, especially if they were not present during the testing.
**Solutions and Benefits:** Initially, we developed a server application that adheres to the communication protocol of the hardware system, which continuously transmits sensor data to a time series database for processing and storage. Users can then access a web application to monitor the real-time pollution levels in their homes and compare these readings with data from various urban areas across Romania. Within the web app, users can configure alerts (via email, SMS, or push notifications), set threshold values for alert triggers, and determine the conditions under which a remediation system should be activated. This functionality was also incorporated into a mobile application compatible with both Android and iOS, enabling users to receive notifications about various monitored parameters including Carbon Monoxide (CO), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure.
**Technologies:** The project utilized Java EE, REST, JavaServer Faces, Ionic, Oracle, TimescaleDB, Maven, Tomcat, Linux, Git, and Jenkins.
