Despite having high traffic, the Revenue website required a complete redesign. Its outdated design was ineffective and failed to align with the updated statewide branding. The web pages were neither responsive nor mobile-friendly, and the navigation was confusing, with redundancy and excessive depth that made it hard for users to locate what they needed. Additionally, the site did not meet accessibility standards, and the content was often difficult to comprehend. Electric Citizen was chosen for our extensive experience in large-scale website redesigns and our expertise in Drupal. We also collaborated with Acquia for hosting and technical consulting. A key challenge was to enhance the Revenue website while minimizing disruption for its core users. Another challenge involved coordinating efforts among three teams: Revenue’s, Acquia’s, and Electric Citizen’s. We achieved this through daily scrums, weekly grooming sessions, and thorough discussions among developers, project managers, and other team members. Additionally, we faced the challenge of reorganizing a complex, content-heavy website and migrating thousands of legacy files from SharePoint to Drupal. Since Revenue was new to Drupal, they required technical guidance on best practices and assistance in training their developer team for future site maintenance. We began with discovery workshops to identify technical requirements and target audiences before moving on to site navigation and page objectives. We developed a new design system that aligned with state branding by using preferred colors and fonts while eliminating unnecessary graphics and outdated stock images that did not enhance the user experience. Our developers collaborated with the client to migrate thousands of media files from their old content management system to the new website. We continue to provide ongoing support and improvements after the launch.

Santa Barbara redesign

City of Santa Barbara, CA

Santa Barbara, CA, is a charming and lively city with a population of over 90,000 in southern California. Although the City website contained valuable information, it required a redesign for a better user experience. We initiated the project with a thorough planning and discovery phase. Our content strategy involved conducting a comprehensive audit of the existing content to evaluate how well the current webpages were performing in relation to client objectives. Interviews with stakeholders and user workshops clarified the audience and site goals, as well as deepened our understanding of the site's purpose and client needs. From a technical perspective, our architects assessed the current CMS and noted the technical requirements for the site. Our team successfully transferred thousands of pages of content, including images and documents, from an outdated CMS to a more modern platform (Drupal). We also addressed privacy issues with the City by identifying areas where personal information could be at risk and assisting in the creation of clear policies to safeguard user privacy. Moving on to visual design, we reviewed existing brand guidelines and considered how the city's imagery could shape our design approach. We created a series of "style tiles" that experimented with various fonts, color schemes, and site styles. These one-page mockups helped outline our initial design direction, followed by a design board displaying different design elements, colors, and typography. After the launch, we have continued to support and enhance the website, conducting user testing and expanding additional subsites.

City of Bloomington

City of Bloomington, MN

Bloomington, MN, is a significant city in Minnesota and a suburb of Minneapolis, renowned for hosting the Mall of America. The city previously operated on a static HTML website that failed to meet contemporary standards—it was not optimized for mobile use, featured a complicated navigation system, and lacked clarity and cohesion. To address these issues, the city collaborated with our agency to transition to a modern Content Management System (CMS), specifically Drupal, while enhancing the user experience and visual aesthetics. We prioritized simplifying the site’s navigation by replacing "internal jargon" familiar only to city employees with terminology that is more recognizable to the public. After finalizing the new navigation structure, we focused on content strategy, essential landing pages, user pathways, and content organization on each page. Leveraging existing branding, we created a fresh design, guided by mobile-first principles and accessibility. Throughout the project, we worked closely with the Bloomington team to develop custom modules and functionalities tailored to the city’s distinct requirements. The website includes a personalized feedback system for residents, a versatile city-wide alert system, a snow emergency alert feature easily manageable by city personnel at any time, migration of historical data regarding plats, advanced search tools utilizing Apache Solr, a searchable parks database, a bid management system, a tracking system for city projects, contacts for various departments, and a management system for jobs and volunteers. The initial project was completed in 2015. Several years later, the site began to show its age, necessitating a significant upgrade of the underlying CMS. Instead of starting anew, Electric Citizen was re-engaged to oversee the migration of the existing site to the latest Drupal version, accompanied by a visual redesign. The second launch occurred in 2021. We continue our partnership with the city, providing ongoing support and improvements for the website.
