Portfolio

Benchmark the core system and upgrade performance

Financial Data Storage Systems (Confidential)

**Overview** A UK division of a financial services firm specializing in financial data has engaged us to enhance their system development. Our assignment involves evaluating the legacy system and subsequently improving its performance. **Business Challenge** The client had hired a UK contractor to create a system intended for storing and aggregating historical financial data. However, as the volume of data grew, the initially acceptable performance of the system declined, resulting in significant usability issues. **Solution** Considering the client’s prior investment in the system with the previous vendor, we agreed that optimizing the existing system would be the most cost-effective approach. Following our analysis, we identified and eliminated an unnecessary layer that was merely reformatting data, which was meant to serve as an abstraction but ultimately added complexity instead. This change led to a 30-35% improvement in performance metrics, which proved inadequate for long-term viability. The next phase involved enhancing the database architecture. We undertook a comprehensive revamp, modifying the table structure, indexing, implementing partitioning, and refining the logic for data insertion and retrieval. This overhaul resulted in an exceptional nearly 300% improvement in performance metrics while keeping side effects on the existing structure to a minimum. **Result** Achieved a 300% enhancement in baseline performance, reduced the client's budget expenditure by 25%, salvaged three years of investments in less than 24 months, and delivered a fully operational core product with capacity for future data expansion.

ALM (Asset liability management) modelling system

Renowned financial services firm

Overview: A well-known financial services firm was seeking a solution for a complex financial modelling project. Their division provides services to financial institutions in various sectors, including pensions, insurance, non-profits, consulting, and investment. This collaboration has lasted a decade, during which we have tackled many challenges within the industry. Business Challenge: The focus of this case study is on the ALM (Asset Liability Management) modelling subsystem. Solution: We developed a reliable financial modelling system that entails a certain degree of complexity. As a result, we divided the system into hundreds of independent modules, each responsible for different calculation components. This strategy facilitates maintenance, testing, and expansion. Constructing an architecture capable of simulating thousands of economic scenarios over decades of data was an immense challenge. To appreciate the significance of this task, one must consider the factors of performance, usage, and assets under management in order to deliver optimal solutions that meet our client's requirements.

Company-wide tax managing system

Tobacco Multinational (Confidential)

**Overview** A multinational tobacco company sought to create a tailored system to oversee the processing of tobacco from farmers to factory processing units. **Business Challenge** This enterprise, operating in multiple markets with billion-dollar revenues, needed a dependable solution to enhance control, automation, and transparency across all its internal processes. Over a year-long collaboration, a significant challenge we tackled was organizing the taxation handling sub-system effectively. **Solution** We designed a system to accommodate the various multi-tier taxation laws dictated by regional regulations. Our considerations extended beyond just national, municipal, and city laws; we also factored in localized business practices (for instance, some operators and markets would pay taxes owed by independent farmers on their behalf, simplifying the administrative burden for their partners). Given that this system spanned the entire organization, we developed a cohesive design that facilitated seamless collaboration across countries, while accurately reflecting market-specific tax details. The final product was a system that ensured consistent usability, straightforward updates, and easy testing of the existing taxation framework (such as incorporating new laws or modifying existing rules). **Result** Over 60 markets enhanced their taxation control, leading to a reduction in global accounting costs by seven figures within a year. The project was completed one year after initial scoping, achieving improved transparency and optimized operational efficiency.
