Traditional Saké Packaging
Traditional Saké Packaging • Case Study
The packaging design for the limited edition premium Fukushimas Tokubetsu Junmai Seishu saké, crafted from high-quality local rice, began with research into traditional Japanese art. After extensive reading and discussions with individuals from Japan, we gained a profound understanding of their history and culture. For instance, we learned that saké bowls were once made from pumpkins and that Japanese people stored small items in boxes decorated using the "Kumiko" technique. These intriguing insights underscored the significant role of art in Japanese culture and laid a solid groundwork for the prototyping phase.
During the prototyping phase, several concepts were explored, including intricate bottle designs inspired by "Origami" art. However, these designs felt too modern and did not align with our traditional vision. Ultimately, we chose to design a bottle that evokes the classic perception of saké. In addition, we included saké cups to create a cohesive set with the bottle. The two cups in a set symbolize friendship, appealing to a new target market: customers looking to purchase a gift for a loved one.
The final product features a portable wooden box containing a traditional ceramic saké set. For the packaging and ceramics, we incorporated elements of traditional Japanese art, merging them into a contemporary minimalist design. The illustrations on the box draw inspiration from classical woodblock prints, while the gold glaze reflects the Japanese "kinsugi" technique. Additionally, a visible certificate of authenticity for the original saké, made from top-grade local rice, is included. It is the thoughtful details, such as the magnetic closure of the packaging, combined with the overall design, that culminate in an exceptional experience.
