On a chilly January day in 2017, the DesignThink team was invited to Dorel Juvenile Group USA to discuss a "Special Project." The Dorel JG development team swiftly introduced us to their latest infant car seat (ICS) initiative, which aimed to ease the challenges parents encounter when moving their babies from the car to the carryable seat portion of the ICS. With our extensive experience designing car seats, the DesignThink team quickly recognized both the unique opportunity and the challenges presented by this project, and we were enthusiastic about beginning our work. We collaborated with Dorel as the innovation incubator, guiding the project team through the early phases to define the product's overall features and user characteristics. Once the concept was successfully defined, the project would be integrated into the Maxi Cosi brand and handed over to the European Maxi Cosi team and design group for production. User-Centered Insights Lead to Market-Defining Solutions Given our history of developing juvenile products like car seats, strollers, and highchairs, DesignThink is well aware of the daily challenges parents face, both physically and emotionally. We began this project with Dorel to create a new car seat that incorporates solutions for those challenges, providing meaningful innovations. By focusing on user insights, our team was able to quickly identify effective solutions and navigate technical obstacles, resulting in enhanced experiences that address real issues parents encounter when using an ICS. Defining the Direction The outcomes of our innovation incubation served as the foundational framework for the European teams to develop a truly impactful and relevant solution for parents in this sector. The DesignThink team takes great pride in having been chosen by Dorel for such a significant role.

Our mission wasn't merely to create a trailer but to help the brand reestablish its connection with the cycling community through innovative solutions to real challenges. We immersed ourselves in the lives of dedicated cyclists—those who tackle 100 miles a day and understand the strengths and weaknesses of their equipment. This process went beyond a simple focus group; our team collaborated with these riders throughout the entire development phase, gathering insights that can only be obtained through extensive, human-centered involvement. The outcome was a trailer system developed from genuine empathy, featuring elegant simplicity. Cyclists expressed their frustrations with complicated setups, tools they don't carry, and wasted time at the trailhead. We responded with innovative designs that addressed these issues—these features emerged not from brainstorming sessions but from the trails themselves, shaped by extensive listening, testing, and design alongside those who demand the most from their gear.
