Decathlon - The World's Sporting Goods Store
Decathlon, a France-based sporting goods giant with over 1,500 stores worldwide, aimed to open its first superstore in Emeryville, CA, near San Francisco. Surprisingly, they are largely unknown in the U.S. We were excited to help introduce Decathlon to Bay Area sports enthusiasts by creating a marketing campaign for this significant store launch. Our two main objectives were to increase foot traffic to the store and achieve over $1 million in sales within the first two weeks, all while adhering to a tight budget.
DDW identified a key brand insight that led to the development of our campaign: Decathlon designs and manufactures all their products, ensuring high quality at low costs. This results in outstanding products at great prices, making sports accessible for everyone. Our media strategy included a blend of paid and organic social media, experiential marketing, and outdoor advertising, all focused on Emeryville and nearby areas.
For social media, we produced videos showcasing innovative Decathlon products, such as a tent that sets up in just two seconds and a full-face snorkel allowing for breathing through both the nose and mouth. We also highlighted Decathlon's diverse range of offerings across more than 80 sports. Additionally, we launched the ‘Have A Ball’ campaign by branding a classic 1963 Citroen panel truck—named ‘Le Bleu’—and filling it with basketballs, soccer balls, golf balls, and more. ‘Le Bleu’ traveled around the community distributing over 15,000 free balls to children in local schools and parks. It was gratifying to contribute to the community in this way.
The results were remarkable: foot traffic at the grand opening surpassed our target of 15,000, and sales during the first weekend exceeded expectations. Great for us!
