MATLAB SDK to React Native: Marine Autopilot App
SeaRebbel, a European deep-tech startup, developed a unique autopilot system for boats using a tailored MATLAB SDK. They were in search of a React Native engineering partner to integrate that SDK into a functional mobile application, a technically demanding task that most agencies were unable to handle. DaaS Labs assigned a senior React Native engineer to the SeaRebbel team for over two years, taking full responsibility for the mobile product. We created a custom native module bridge to connect the MATLAB SDK to the application, established Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity with the autopilot hardware, and implemented a Mapbox-driven navigation interface featuring two modes: waypoint placement and freehand path drawing. Both modes ensured real-time validation of water-only routes, preventing any paths from crossing land. Additionally, we developed live vessel track playback, micro-adjustment controls, and an SDK debug interface for the internal engineering team. The outcome: minimal latency in path rendering, and the app is now operational on actual vessels. SeaRebbel has secured several rounds of investment and won multiple startup awards, using the app developed by DaaS Labs as their live demo for investors. "Our engineer's expertise in React Native was remarkable. Their proactive communication and problem-solving skills positively impacted our project significantly, and we would gladly collaborate with them again." — Engineering Lead, SeaRebbel.
