Low-cost mobile EEG for epilepsy detection
Challenge BrainCapture, a Danish startup, is developing an accessible EEG medical solution for over 4 billion people in emerging markets who do not have access to affordable and reliable neurological testing. This lack of resources leaves millions without proper diagnosis or treatment for conditions such as epilepsy. Approach Traditional EEG scans, which utilize metal electrodes placed on the scalp to track brain activity, tend to be expensive, complicated, and often unavailable in resource-limited areas in Africa and Asia. To tackle this issue, we set out to create a next-generation amplifier that boosts brain signals from EEG caps and transmits the data wirelessly to a smartphone app through Bluetooth. Our efforts concentrated on three main aspects: first, designing and building the electronics, mechanics, and system layout for a production prototype; second, prototyping the device, implementing firmware, and conducting tests; and third, creating prototypes that could successfully pass evaluations in certified laboratories. Outcome The final product is a Bluetooth-enabled, active, battery-powered EEG medical device, designed for user-friendliness and optimized for telemedicine and AI assistance, providing EEG services throughout Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. The examination results deliver crucial insights to help physicians make diagnostic or treatment decisions.
