Hornby Hobbies

Hornby is a cherished brand and a frontrunner in the model railway sector, recognized for its premium 00 gauge models and accessories. As they commemorate their centenary, they turned to Bryter Digital to create a cross-platform app that works with a new power controller currently under development in-house. Utilizing cutting-edge technology like Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), Hornby aimed to develop a modern generation of DC layout controllers compatible with both new and older analogue train setups. Alongside the app, Hornby was also working on new hardware to manage powered accessories, such as point motors, signals, and turntables. Our role involved collaborating with their hardware developers in Hong Kong to design, build, and launch the HM DC app, which enables model railway fans to control their entire layout from their mobile device effortlessly. The Solution Released in April 2021, the HM DC app is a cross-platform solution created with React Native as its framework. It features custom-built integrated libraries that facilitate Bluetooth Mesh control of Hornby’s DC layouts via their new HM 6000 and HM 6010 analogue controllers. Whether you're an experienced model railway fan or a newcomer, the HM DC app simplifies the management of your layout and accessories right from your palm. The app highlights include easy connection to the HM DC device through the standard Bluetooth pairing process. Beyond basic control functionalities, it also offers a user-friendly “Track Builder” feature, enabling users to design and operate their layouts and accessories directly from the app.
