Optimization of online gaming platform used by millions of players across the globe

The client operates a highly successful online gaming platform frequented by millions of players worldwide. There was an opportunity to boost profits by analyzing game events and user activity, and creating incentives based on player performance or loyalty. Immediate results were necessary to keep users engaged while they play. The challenge was compounded by the high volume of game events generated by hundreds of thousands of users, which posed significant engineering difficulties. Appliscale developed a Complex Event Processing engine capable of efficiently processing multiple streams of events from various sources in real time. The stateless architecture of this solution facilitated horizontal scaling and ensured high availability. The system's elastic nature allowed it to accept any event format, and we designed it in a way that made it easy to modify additional criteria using a straightforward query language. A skilled team was assembled to design, implement, and test the entire solution. Thanks to Appliscale's diverse expertise, integrating various technologies such as Java, Scala, Kubernetes, React, and EventStore posed no issues. The project was divided into several phases, enabling the client to test results and make adjustments dynamically. Utilizing containers for all components ensured smooth deployments to the client’s infrastructure. The Appliscale team maintained transparency throughout the development process and kept the client well-informed. Our regular onsite demonstrations of completed parts helped guide the client in achieving an effective solution. Comprehensive stress testing provided detailed insights into the system's performance under load, allowing for accurate hardware estimations.

The US-based space rocket manufacturer currently manages thousands of invoices each month, which vary from 5 to over 10,000 line items. Their existing process involves teams of supply chain specialists reviewing a variety of documents to ensure a high level of accuracy. Additionally, compliance with the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) necessitates that certain ERP systems be isolated and maintained within secure networks, resulting in significant data sync challenges across multiple systems. With several ERP systems in place, integration with various applications was essential. Appliscale explored multiple off-the-shelf solutions, but most were unsuitable due to ITAR constraints. Consequently, Appliscale and the client decided to create a custom solution using the AWS GOV cloud, leveraging machine learning and character recognition capabilities. This application will integrate with existing ERP systems to fully automate the invoice processing workflow. A serverless application was designed to be highly scalable and capable of quick deployments via feature updates. With AWS serverless technology, all infrastructure is codified, and an automated build and deployment process was established. The serverless architecture allows the client to avoid server maintenance costs, paying only for code execution. Tools such as AWS Lambda, CloudFormation, EC2, and SageMaker were employed. The next project phase is being prepared, which will enhance the machine learning system to better identify common errors and facilitate human training of the system. Appliscale oversaw all technical requirements gathering, architectural design, development, and project management.

The entire system is serverless and hosted in the cloud, necessitating substantial computing resources due to its high traffic, leading to hefty monthly bills. To reduce these costs, Appliscale implemented AWS Auto Scaling. By analyzing recent traffic data and long-term weekly patterns, our engineers developed a dynamic scaling policy. EC2 instances are scaled based on the latest average request volume and the time of day, ensuring that the number of nodes remains balanced and that incoming traffic is managed by a minimal yet reliable number of hosts. This setup also promotes an auto-healing infrastructure, where healthy hosts automatically replace those that fail, requiring no manual intervention. As a result, the infrastructure becomes immutable—if a host misbehaves, it is simply replaced, with automation handling the rest. Through continuous metrics analysis with DataDog, Appliscale engineers crafted a customized scaling policy. Utilizing automation tools like CloudFormation, Ansible, and Jenkins, we streamlined and enhanced the release process. The implementation of a dynamic scaling policy and a completely immutable infrastructure has led to a roughly 40% monthly reduction in EC2 maintenance costs, yielding significant savings for the client.
