Brand Repositioning Through Research
Client: Alcolear (biotech/supplement firm) Challenge: Alcolear had developed a truly innovative product—an enzyme-based pre-drinking supplement grounded in solid science. However, the market response was lacking, falling significantly short of expectations. Scope: Conducted market research, competitive analysis, brand strategy development, positioning, messaging, website planning, and content creation. Timeline: 5 months. Budget Range: HKD 50,000–HKD 60,000. The Problem: I began with research, analyzing their product, pricing, website, packaging, and competitor comparisons. However, the key insights emerged from a focus group with potential customers. When I asked participants to evaluate the company based solely on the website and packaging, only 31% expressed trust. Additionally, only 24% considered it a premium product. Most participants estimated the price to be around HKD 300, while the actual retail price was HKD 1,200, revealing a significant disconnect between perceived and actual cost. The issue wasn't with the product itself; it related to their overall presentation—including the website, packaging, and messaging—which conveyed a sense of low quality and untrustworthiness. The Solution: I repositioned the brand to emphasize it as an elite, science-driven supplement. This involved crafting new positioning and messaging, redesigning the website (which I coordinated with the designer and created the content for), adopting new photography and imagery, and integrating authentic customer testimonials and images. The Results: A follow-up focus group after the rebranding revealed trustworthiness had risen from 31% to 78%, while the perception of the product as premium increased from 24% to 88%. This change was not merely superficial; it transformed public perception from viewing the brand as a cheap pseudoscience to recognizing it as a legitimate product. Services Offered: Market research, competitive analysis, brand strategy, positioning, messaging, website planning, content creation, and vendor management.
