Chaplins Mill Road Crossing

Acorn delivered civil design and permitting services for a stream crossing at the Muddy River on Chaplins Mill Road in Naples, Maine. Completing this design successfully and on schedule was essential, as Chaplins Mill Road has experienced frequent flooding in recent years. The existing culvert, an inadequate 8-foot corrugated metal pipe, was deteriorating, leading to visible road surface deformation, shoulder erosion, and a deep scour pool at the outlet. Guided by Stream Smart principles, the design aimed to restore the hydrology, hydraulics, and fluvial geomorphology of the stream to conditions close to what they were before development, ensuring safe and uninterrupted passage for aquatic life and water below and for vehicles and pedestrians above. The final design featured a 19-foot wide precast clamshell concrete box culvert that was embedded and appropriately sized to handle a 100-year storm flow, accommodate floating debris, and span 1.2 times the bankfull width. The embedment material inside the culvert was selected to mimic the surrounding native channel substrate. This new crossing restores the horizontal and vertical alignment of the stream profile to predevelopment conditions, enhancing hydraulic connectivity and facilitating the movement of aquatic organisms along the stream corridor. Additionally, its increased flow capacity will bolster the resilience of the crossing against future storm events.

Montville Gravel Road Assessment

Long Creek South Branch

In collaboration with the Long Creek Watershed Management District (LCWMD), Acorn provided civil engineering, permitting, and construction oversight for stormwater Best Management Practice (BMP) retrofits in a 48-acre urbanized area of the Long Creek watershed. The main goal of the project was to introduce effective stormwater BMPs to improve the performance of existing systems and mitigate water quality issues such as elevated temperature, dissolved oxygen, chlorides, nutrient levels, metal concentrations, and runoff volume. Acorn's design included a gravel wetland BMP to manage and retain a significant portion of the stormwater runoff from the Maine Mall, along with a modular wetland system for a smaller subcatchment area. The project also offered the additional advantage of eliminating non-native and invasive plant species that currently dominate the stormwater detention area.
