a Revista – Special Edition, 2023 This special edition of a Revista, a biannual publication from Portugal's Supreme Court of Justice, marks the 190th anniversary of the court's establishment. It includes eight articles discussing various aspects of the Court’s activities over its history, covering topics such as law, architecture, history, archives, democratization, and women's rights. Established in 1833, shortly after the country adopted a constitutional monarchy, the Supreme Court of Justice serves as the highest legal authority in the Portuguese Republic today.

Itálica — INCM Book Collection

Portuguese National Print House and Mint

The Itálica INCM Book Collection—imparted by Imprensa Nacional—features a series of comparative translations of classic Italian literature. Aiming to create a "modern classic," we initiated our research focused on adapting early Italian printing styles using contemporary techniques. To begin, we selected the Galaxie Copernicus typeface, inspired by the works of Aldus Moretius, and limited our choice to roman and italic styles from the sixteenth century, omitting bold variations, all while maintaining a consistent body size. We established hierarchies among paratexts through typographic styles and cases rather than colors. Section transitions are designed to evoke the imagery of a theater’s curtain movement and the gradual fading of light. For this purpose, we created software to generate vector gradients that mimic the grain of mezzotints, adjusting each dot's shape, size, and frequency. Our approach to the book covers was two-pronged: graphic and tactile. The graphic components reflect early Venetian printing influences, drawing from the design of frontispieces and Roman monumental lettering. The tactile aspect features marbled paper textures in the embossings, transforming visual elements into a sensory experience.

The Book Box is a beautifully crafted collection of 20 dummy books housed in a sleek and durable case, each showcasing various industrial bookbinding techniques, such as perfect binding and Smyth-sewn signatures on traditional hardcovers. Designers and educators often find it challenging to effectively demonstrate the complexities of bookbinding to clients, colleagues, and students. We sought a solution to this problem but couldn't find one, so we created it ourselves. The Book Box goes beyond being just a set of books; it delves into the manufacturing process, the techniques and materials involved, and of course, where to explore these methods on The Book Block and The Book Cover.
