Military Balance+ Data and Analysis Tools

The International Institute for Strategic Studies

Objective secured the IISS contract to create Military Balance+. This system consists of three components: a comprehensive database featuring multiple modules that store information on military forces, equipment, defense economics, and procurement for 171 countries and select non-state armed groups; a content management system enabling IISS analysts to generate, approve, and publish data with version control; and a subscriber online dashboard offered in both corporate and individual licensing formats. The updated database provides subscribers with an easy way to compare various data sets, such as global defense budgets, year by year. Additionally, a data analysis tool is included, allowing for user-friendly comparisons and displays of economies, equipment, forces, and personnel in charts and tables. Corporate members can download the data and export it to Excel at any time from any location. The dashboard is designed for desktop use and can be accessed via the browser at www.iiss.org/militarybalanceplus. This new product is anticipated to revolutionize how IISS shares its data and enhance the speed and quality of decision-making.

Power BI Dashboards Provide Business Intelligence

Moving made easy

Objective initially took the time to comprehend the inner workings of the business and its goals for implementing internal dashboards using Power BI. Next, it was essential to gain a thorough understanding of Moving Made Easy's databases. To achieve this, Objective's data scientists collaborated with Moving Made Easy’s team to pinpoint the necessary data for the dashboards and locate it within their databases. Our data scientists then established the appropriate relationships between various tables to ensure that the dashboards would function correctly and efficiently once developed. Ultimately, after completing the necessary groundwork, dashboards were created to enable Moving Made Easy to easily visualize key KPIs, identify missing data points, and analyze supplier activity. This included an Excel report that was replicated in Power BI, automating the process and saving both time and resources.

Defence Budget Forecast Tool

The International Institute for Strategic Studies

The IISS defense budget forecast employs a model based on a Bayesian network. The organization identified the key factors influencing defense budget allocations and, in conjunction with a data-driven model utilizing historical data, created an econometric forecasting model. This algorithm was developed in collaboration with data scientists from Objective. Initially, the data analytics team at Objective was assigned to create a data-driven algorithm to compare three distinct groups of countries, which involved reviewing and tidying data, engineering features, and exploring the datasets. Using statistical methods in R, three models were established, and after the IISS team's evaluation of their performance, the best model was chosen. Following promising results from the initial concept, a comprehensive analytics project to create a defense budget forecast using a Bayesian network model was authorized. This project included the construction, training, and testing of an econometric forecast algorithm that leveraged up to 45 highly correlated variables, such as macroeconomic factors, defense-related economic data, regime types, and dynamics of warfare and international relations. Expertise from IISS helped refine the model outputs for each country. With a soft launch in July 2020, the user interface was designed to analyze defense budget trends for selected markets: Australia, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Coverage has been broadened and will continue to expand to include most major markets globally. Furthermore, the tool allows users to adjust forecasts by applying percentage changes ranging from +25% to -25%, enabling them to modify the IISS projections for a more optimistic or pessimistic perspective, which serves as an overlay to the IISS projected figures.
