Mind The Gap

We developed a new brand identity and website for Mind the Gap that enhances their mission of working with learning-disabled and/or autistic artists to produce bold, inclusive, and original theatre. The updated brand identity highlights the vibrancy, creativity, and equality central to their efforts, while the new digital platform offers a more accessible and expressive environment for sharing their narratives. Mind the Gap sought to revitalize its brand to better capture its essence as a fearless, dynamic, and innovative disability arts organization based in Bradford. The design needed to be consistent, adaptable, and easy for staff to implement across various areas such as performances, training, and community engagement, appealing to a broad audience that includes prospective students and their families, arts programmers, funders, and local communities. The updated brand was intended to resonate within the arts sector without being exclusive, clearly conveying MTG's legacy, quality, and dedication to advancing the field. The new brand concept revolves around the idea of gaps as representations of opportunity, growth, and transformation—visual stepping stones that symbolize the journeys of learning-disabled and autistic artists as they develop their skills, confidence, and creative aspirations. This theme aligns with the tagline "Step into the Arts," encouraging artists, audiences, and partners to progress, cross boundaries, and explore new creative possibilities. Additionally, these elements highlight the existing obstacles in the industry, positioning Mind the Gap as an organization that actively works to bridge these gaps through professional opportunities, collaboration, and advocacy. A versatile and expressive color palette enhances this message, combining bold, vibrant colors with softer, nuanced shades to create a system that can transition from energetic to refined based on the context. This adaptability ensures the brand remains unified while accommodating the diverse scope of MTG's initiatives.

Planning Aid Scotland

Planning Aid Scotland (PAS) is a charitable organization dedicated to empowering communities to participate in the planning process. It focuses on inclusivity, especially in underprivileged areas, by prioritizing community involvement in decisions regarding their environments. To modernize its image and improve accessibility, PAS collaborated with Bold Studio for a rebranding initiative. A significant finding highlighted that the acronym PAS was a barrier to reaching new audiences. To honor the organization’s legacy, Bold Studio decided to use the full name in all materials, which enhanced clarity and recognition. They also created a structured and meaningful logo that includes references to PAS's mission and history: technical drawings symbolizing planning, a cross representing assistance, and the Saltire of Scotland. The updated branding strikes a balance between professionalism and approachability, featuring a lively color scheme and grid patterns that soften the technical aspects. This new identity effectively conveys PAS's expertise while encouraging wider participation, in line with its goal of making planning processes more transparent and inclusive.

Creative Glasgow

Old Studio created a unique brand and typeface for Creative Glasgow, a center for Participatory Arts. Inspired by the city's identity, the custom typography merges Glasgow's artistic history with its industrial advancements. The outcome is a modern, expressive design aimed at fostering connection, clarity, and creative influence. Creative Glasgow is a citywide initiative focused on empowering creative professionals across Greater Glasgow, irrespective of their discipline, background, or career stage. Emphasizing inclusion, sustainability, and social justice, it nurtures a vibrant and equitable creative and cultural sector. Our task was to develop a visual identity that encapsulated this spirit of connection while firmly grounded in Glasgow's unique cultural landscape. The core of the brand features custom letter forms that reflect the city's creative history, present, and future. Our inspirations were drawn from various sources, capturing the diverse and often contradictory nature of Glasgow, such as the straightforward subway system (representing connectivity), shipbuilding (highlighting industrial heritage), iconic signage (like that of Barrowlands, a cherished cultural venue), and graffiti (symbolizing street art). This was balanced with artistic influences, including subtle acknowledgments of Rennie Mackintosh. The letters transcend static usage; they animate on the website, energize social media content, and come alive through a dynamic motif serving as a focal point, featuring imagery, moving text, and functioning as a versatile branding element. To enhance the typography, we incorporated interlocking bubbles as visual metaphors for collaboration, diversity, and community. Together, the letters and visual elements create a unique, accessible identity that encourages participation while keeping a creative flair.
